Such short sighted planning by this new government again, it works ok for the academic but for those left fortunate than these Eton educated ministers serious problems will arise. The less academic will have fewer options to choose and the full GCSE route is not providing the options for these students to achieve. The options such as Young Apprentices have been removed when it allowed fantastically successful transition into the workplace. These students will now be struggling to get through a diet of GCSEs which will = drop out/poor attendance/poor results. Just about any school will say the same thing that has been providing this kind of support for their young people.

Interesting article, thanks.

When I taught English to Korean students, I realised that I struggled to explain English grammar, since I had never actively studied it. Instead, I had learnt English grammar just by growing up in England and hearing and speaking English every day. All I could do was tell people what was "correct" and what was "wrong" grammar.

However, when I have studied other languages I have actively learnt the grammar of those languages. I would say that this has allowed much quicker language acquisition. Even though I am a fluent English speaker, if you think about it I learnt English in a very inefficient way and it took me many years. That said, the amount of practice I have done has ensured I am at a higher level than I could be with any other language I chose to study.

This is an interesting topic for discussion.

Thanks,
Jon Sumner

I like the getting a head start part. People used to wonder I could get such good grades when it seemed like I wasn't really working. The answer: I'm studying the next chapter. Getting that head start and staying ahead just makes everything easier since when you're in class you're actually going over stuff you already know instead of it being new information. Great post and thank you!

In comparing poems, you really need to have some measures or criteria that will be used as a basis. You cannot just say that the other one is better in structure or alike when do not know this basic things. Nice post you got there.

Thanks for this; it has boosted my confidence which was on the wane - I will be sitting an entrance exam for University in two weeks and I'm somewhat unprepared. I'm just going to compare random texts as much as I can to familiarise myself with the skills involved.

You're right - once an English student, that's what you remain for life; everything surrounding you gets analysed...
